Mike Portnoy's new "Black & Silver Monster" was created in conjunction with the Dream Theater's latest release, "Black Clouds & Silver Linings"
The shells are Starclassic Bubinga, with Black Nickel hardware, and a new limited edition finish named after their album.
As with his previous "Monster" kits, this latest creation features two drum kits combined into one massive setup.
The left "main" side of the kit includes, 7"x8", 8"x10", and 9"x12" rack toms, along with Mike's 5.5"x 14" Melody Master signature snare drum.
He uses a 4-pc Low Octoban set mounted above the main hi-hat cymbals.
The "floor tom" of the main kit is actually a 5.5"x14" custom-sized drum, which makes positioning it much easier.
Here's a view of the kit main kit from the front of the stage.
A close-up view of the new "Black Clouds & Silver Linings" lacquer paint finish.
The Octobans have been painted in the new finish as well.
This is where the two sides of the Monster intersect, as seen from behind the kit.
The same intersection point from another view.
The right side kit features Mike's 5.5"x12" Melody Master snare, along with 2 Octobans, an 18"x20" kick, 5"x12" single-headed Tymp Tom, and 14"x14" and 16"x16" floor toms.
He also mounts a 14"x20" Starclassic Bubinga Gong Bass drum above the floor toms, as seen here.
Here you can see a close-up of the 12" Tymp Tom.
The Gong Bass, like the Octobans, is painted to match the rest of the kit.
And finally, a view of the right-side kit from the front the stage.
